I am a fan of The Terminator franchise. In the movies, SkyNet is the super AI that took over the world. Skynet began as a computer security software that was created by the US government to protect the millions of network and computers around the world. When Skynet was released on these computers, with its AI, it gains some sort of self awareness which evolved to become self preservation. Skynet deem that mankind is the cause of all problems in the world and set out to eliminate all humans.

Skynet is the perfect example to your question. A super AI that attempts to take over the world. But I don't quite believe it happening in real life. No matter how intelligent it is, Skynet is still just a piece of software, that is created by a group of people. Although intelligence can be created and the software can 'think', but it is quite not realistic to impart 'feelings' into a piece of software. It is this feeling that distinguish a human from a computer code. Without feelings, I don't think the software can develop any form of self awareness. It would not know about hatred, revenge, killings, war, or elimination.

The scene when AI takes over the world will only happen in Hollywood movies. Having said that, here are some movies that are similar in nature.

  • Eagle Eye - Super AI computer attempts to assassinate the US President
  • I Robot - Robots attempt to overrule its creators and control humans
  • Matrix - The AI creates an AI for humans, giving us a perfect world to live in.

Researchers estimate the chance is 50% for machines to be able to take over all human work within 120 years. Experts estimate the robot will not take over the work of surgeons until 2053, and it took 34 years before the machine could compete with mathematicians to write in academic journals.
