A woman takes responsibility for herself and those that she cares about.

This doesn't have to be accomplished in isolation, but a sense of duty and responsibility is key. This is why often women are treated differently upon becoming pregnant and giving birth. It's not required of course to be a mother to be a woman, but motherhood definitely requires responsibility.

On the other hand there are girls who take responsibility at an early age. This doesn't make them women, but they should be accorded the same respect. There are girls that are required to be responsible at an early age, this doesn't mean that they should be held accountable for that level of responsibility if they are still children in age. Sometimes circumstances in a family require more than is optimal for an individual.

Lastly, I think all of the above could be applied to male single as well. I don't think that anyone can call himself a man if he is not ready to take responsibility for himself, his decisions, and those that he cares about. I think this is a universal truth that applies to all.
