RE: Musing Posts

India is in the midst of "the world's largest energy transformation project," the organizers of the Vienna Energy Forum said when they introduced keynote speaker India's Energy Minister Piyush Goyal on 11 May.

"Everything changed in 2015 with the Paris climate agreement. We must separate economic growth from environmental impacts and leave a better world behind," said Goyal, who received resounding applause from the 1,650 energy experts and government officials present in Vienna. "Every moment counts.

"I have never heard such visionary and progressive statements in a world-leading country," Tuvalu Prime Minister Enele Sopoaga later told me. The small Pacific island nation is just three metres above sea level, so rising sea levels resulting from climate change have forced thousands of people to leave the country.

"India understands the urgency of climate action," Sopoaga said.

India is in a great hurry to turn its energy system into a green system to create jobs, improve the quality of life of its citizens, clean air and water and, of course, fight climate change, say its leaders. This is a country of 1.3 billion people, where almost 300 million of them have no access to electricity and the average annual income is just over 1,400 euros.

Although it now runs mostly on coal, India will add 50 percent more solar and wind power than has been installed so far in the United States. It will also replace 770 million light bulbs in streets and homes with LED lights, which are more efficient because of their energy savings and longer service life. In addition, it will provide access to electricity for the first time to tens of thousands of rural populations. And the best part: India is making it possible at a faster rate than anyone could have imagined.

"India is the model to follow when it comes to clean energy... which shows that this is not a burden, quite the opposite," says Vivien Foster, an energy economics expert at the World Bank. "It's a great opportunity.

I think the answer to your question is a resounding yes, as India is already on track towards this goal.
