Something in music: origin

One evening at a hot, trendy L.A. nightclub on a rare solo outing, yours truly found himself standing alone at the bar preparing to review the upcoming act. Before he had taken more than a few notes, however, he was bookended by a pair of vivacious vixens who insisted on engaging your rockin’ writer in cozy conversation. Strangely, the subject of “marriage” arose.

One of the young ladies noted that when a gal is about to get hitched she needs “something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue.” Your provocative penman was immediately inspired. After all, those very same terms could be applied to music too: “Something old” or classic, “something new” or recently released, “something borrowed” (a cover), and “something blue” (a blues song or a song with “blue” in the title.) The rest is history.

Something Old

Our “something old this edition is the classic cut “Show Me The Way” written and recorded by the English singer-songwriter and musician Peter Frampton. The song first appeared on his 1975 platter ^Frampton*, The song became a hit when the live version (presented here) was included on his 1976 release Frampton Comes Alive!

Something New

The “something new” this time is the clever, positive song “Vitamin U” by American romantic country duo, Poppyiris. Poppyiris consists of singer-songwriter and producer Deedee O’Malley and fellow recording artist Mike Lusk. According to their website, they “both grew up singing background harmonies for artists such as Willie Nelson, Kenny Rogers, Martina McBride, LeAnn Rimes, Chris Cagel, Stephen Bishop, Glen Campbell, Keith Urban, Garth Brooks, Miranda Lambert” and others.

Something Borrowed

This edition, oir “something borrowed” is “(I'm Not Your) Steppin' Stone.” It was written by Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart and first appeared on Paul Revere & the Raiders’ 1955 LP Midnight Ride, This rockin’ cover is by the English band known as Rob Clarke and The Wooltones. It was included on the 2016 compilation disc titled The Great British Psychedelic Trip Revisited. (Make sure you check out their most recent release, Putting The L In Wootones too.)

Something Blue

Finally, our “something blue” this edition is the song titled “The Blues Has Got Me” by the Twelve Bar Blues Band. It’s the title track of the 2006 album of the same name. The song has been played on many internet radio stations. The group has performed live on national and international stages.
