Canción escrita por escrita por Don Felder, Glenn Frey y Don Henley, trata sobre el materialismo y el exceso. California es utilizada como entorno, pero podría estar relacionado con cualquier lugar de los Estados Unidos. El 9 de noviembre del año 2007 Don Henley en el London Daily Mail dijo: "Algunas de las interpretaciones más salvajes de esa canción han sido sorprendentes. Realmente se trataba de los excesos de la cultura estadounidense y de algunas chicas que conocíamos. Pero también se trataba del equilibrio incómodo entre arte y comercio ".
Gana un Grammy de 1977 como el Record del año. Sin embargo, la banda no se presentó para aceptar el premio, ya que Don Henley no creía en los concursos.

Esta canción la conozco desde hace años y siempre me ha gustado, pero nunca me había preocupado por entender la letra.
No sabía que hablaba sobre el materialismo y el exceso. De hecho pensaba que era una especie de oda a California, porque lo único a lo que prestaba atención era el coro, y ahí parecían estar hablando bien del tal "Hotel California" o.o
Definitivamente aquella música difícilmente vuelva!
