Comparing Rainbows

While recently visiting Maui I had the chance to hear numerous performances by local Hawaiians and Somewhere Over The Rainbow was played quite a bit. After browsing a listing to a few smaller reiterations on youtube it was clear that none of them captured the social and intellectual aspects or the cultural expression quite like they did in Maui besides Israel Kamakawiwo'Ole version of the song. It's incredible how this song can bring back smells of exotic flowers and the sensation of a island breeze. Ironically when landing there was a giant rainbow right over the island ending somewhere in the rural lands of Hana when leaving its safe to say I know where dorothy was dreaming of. In comparison they both are incredible takes but to me, provide different beats and scales although being the same song. One being upbeat and joyful mainly because of the higher pitches of the ukulele vs the guitar being deeper and portraying something heavier and then the piano having high pitches and sproatic notes. This was interesting as to me it seems to be a mixture of both world and popular music having roots in the cultural traditions of playing the ukulele which was created towards the end of the romantic period and early twentieth and twenty first century, and then playing a song by Judy Garland or Art Tatum which are more closely related culturally but both different than the native Hawaiian culture. The Kamakawiwo’Ole version seems to play on more traditional native cultural style. It displays something similar to a folk melody from the romantic period and being a solo act playing the music and singing.
