The band emerged when guitarist Billy Howerdel met Maynard James Keenan, when Howerdel had the position of Technician in guitars in the Tool band, during the recording of the Ænima album. Howerdel gave some demos to the lead singer of Tool, Maynard James Keenan, who proposed himself as a vocalist.

It is said that Billy Howerdel's original project involved very long subjects, long enough to be the band Complete sound of a film, in addition to having a female voice.

Paz Lenchantin, Josh Freese and Troy Van Leeuwen later joined them and recorded their first album Mer De Noms, French For "sea names", where most of the tracks have personal names such as "Magdalena", "Judith", "Rose",
"Thomas", "Orestes", etc.

During a time of rest, they separated Peace Lenchantin (to Zwan) and Troy Van Leeuwen (to Queens of the Stone Age),And then joined by Jeordie Osborn White, also known as Twiggy Ramirez, because of his position in the band Marilyn Manson, and James Iha, guitarist of the dismembered band The Smashing Pumpkins.

With the new line-up the album Thirteenth Step comes out, with a sound considered more calm, for the 2 of November of 2004, coinciding with the presidential elections in the USA, is released the album eMOTIVE, with versions of peace, war,Freedom, etc., and along with this album, also launched the aMOTION package, which includes a DVD with live presentations and All the videos of the band, as well as a remix CD included.
