You are being manipulated by the music industry

in #music6 years ago

Most of the modern pop songs sound familiar and that is no coincidence. There are focusing more on the beat and high volume rather than lyrics and actual meaning.I will talk about the methods used to make you like their song by actually manipulating the human brain.

1.Repetition

The first and most abused way to trick the brain into liking a certain thing is by repetition.
The brain doesn't define what is good and what is bad.We define it.So when you hear a new song your brain will check if you have ever heard it before. Then when the brain finds similar beats that you enjoyed before it will automatically like the song, because it is connected with a good experience.

That's why the music industry uses similar beats. They want to be sure that you will love it.
They usually will repeat a catchy phrase or even just a word(Rihanna - Work) to ensure that you will appreciate the song eventually. They use simple words that are in our everyday life so when you hear the word you get triggered. You hear the trigger word and you just sing along.

2.Singing about love

Don't get me wrong, there is nothing wrong in it.When you sing about love people will just like it.I am sorry to tell it, but is actually a pretty abused tactic. There are artist who their only topic is love. And it puts you in a box where you only hear about one thing over and over again. It should not be abused for money.

3.Early catchy part

In every song there is a catchy part and now it used earlier in the songs so you get hooked. When a person listens to a song they usually wait for the "hook".If they don't get hooked early into the song they lose interest and switch to another one.

For example back in the days the ending of a song was usually the "hook".A great solo when you just end with satisfaction.

4.Sexuality and money

It is no secret that the music industry and the porn industry have something in common.
And it is lack of clothing. The lust of the eyes. When you see a "hot" woman or something shiny and expensive ,that you admire, your body releases dopamine (the hormone of happiness). When you listen to the song once again even when you don't watch the video the brain will think of the last time you have heard and watched the video and it will connect it with the last experience. You will automatically fall in love with the song even if it is garbage.

In conclusion, more than ever before we need meanigful music, but we get less of it.Because it doesn't pays.
A one well crafted song will cost them so much money that in the end it may not be successful.
Satisfaction is key in this industry. They want to satisfy you even by manipulating you.But by satisfying you i don't mean you as a person, but your senses.

Manipulation is successful only when you don't know about it.If you want to really know if you like a song you will just need to enjoy it when you hear it the first time.Any song is liked by the brain when it is been played multiple times.
You need to be careful about what you listen to, because it is influencing your behavior and thoughts consciously or subconsciously.

Thank you for reading.I am not a native English speaker so if you find any errors (probably there will be) a will be glad if you comment and correct me so i can improve.

What you are saying has been true for about 5 decades now. The lack of quality music in the main stream is obvious. I rarely hear any thing truly new in music these day, maybe that's why I don't listen much anymore. Lack of quality education, music or otherwise, is what has allowed the industry to use these formulas you speak of.

My rule of thumb in determining what music is worth my time to listen to is if I think the piece will be heard in 10 or more years I will listen otherwise I move on.
