Watch The Horizon (unplugged from the 80s)

In another lifetime I remember being a progressive rock drummer. Played with a few guys from the local area for about nine years. Being who we were, we didn't do covers. We could, in a pinch. But you'd have to get us pretty wasted to hear us do it in public.

We wrote our own tunes. Some of them were not too bad. We wrote Watch The Horizon toward the end of our time playing together, in the early-to-mid eighties. Right after this was recorded, Randy had an acute need to relocate to the other end of the country. Dave joined another band and started touring. Charles found himself a suddenly credentialed biochemist and headed off to make money in beer.

This was recorded way back in the mid 1980s on a reel tape deck (don't remember the brand... TEAC? Fostex?), using passive TASCAM modular boards (which are still in a closet here in my house!) for the little bit of mixing required. Randy Thaxton on vocals and guitar. Song by Randy and me. I wrote the first two verses and the original refrain line. Randy added to that.

This is an unplugged version but when the band played this, it freakin' rocked. Sadly, I don't have that recorded. I'm amazed this copy lasted this long.

The original line for the chorus was "...winged creatures of the light." I saw this as two people together waiting and watching for the sun to rise. In the new day that was dawning, they would be creatures of the light.

Randy changed it, said it felt better to sing it this way after he added the third verse. I think he changed the entire meaning of the song with that one word. Lyrics as written, below. I hope you enjoy this piece of my past, never before exposed to the web.

Watch The Horizon

Watch the horizon darlin'--
It's the beginning of brand new days.
If we let it, eternity will pass away.

Oh, we are winged creatures of the light.

Watch the horizon darlin'--
It's the beginning of brand new dreams.
If we let it, we could rid our love of games.

Oh, we are winged creatures of the light.

Look to the horizon darlin'--
The world aroused, says some old poem...
Can't you feel the hunger?
If you can let's heed the call.

Oh, we are winged creatures of the light.

This has been done for a whiile and still remains fresh just like you sang it recently, i love te lyrics especially. Doyou still compose or sing and where are the rest of your group now

Randy was the oldest of us, he's been passed from this earth for a long time. Dave is living nearby on a little farm, runs the local water department. Charles retired on beer money, built a studio in the country and disappeared into it. I still play with music, but not as much as when I was younger!
