My Top 10 Favorite Epica Songs

I discovered Epica through Metallian, a France based magazine distributed here in Montreal, Canada. With each issue of this metal music-centric mag, you get a free CD composed of about a dozen songs coming from as many different bands. I've not gotten my hands on one of these for a long time, but when I used to, getting acquainted with new musical artists was my main purpose of buying it at my local bookstore.

Now, who is Epica? I'm not very good at this artist analysis exercise, and since art is subjective, the task at hand is not easy from the get-go. But I'll try my best to do the band justice.

First off, I got to say that the song that was on the Metallian CD was The Last Crusade (at # 2). If you listen to it, you'll immediately get a sense of the epic nature of their music and why it is classified as symphonic metal on Wikipedia. But genres labels can be very limiting, so for example, if you were to pay attention to Universal Death Squad (at #9) you might get a sense of a progressive influence or, let's say you were to tune in on The Obsessive Devotion (at # 3), at times you might catch some black metal vibes while at others get folk ones.

Epica's most distinguishing aspect probably is Simone Simons' voice. To get a good appreciation of it, I suggest hitting play on Solitary Ground (at # 10).

The order of the following songs from the Dutch band can be taken with a grain salt. I could have wasted a bunch of time reordering them, but the thing is, if they all found their way to this post, it's obviously means I truly enjoy them all. With maybe the exception of The Essence of Silence (at # 1), which gets me emotional each time I listen and thus, never had any doubts on its number one spot on my list.

That's about it, I have no idea what else to say that could directly be relevant to the music at this point. I feel everything you really need to know, musically speaking, better lays in the clips down below than in a bunch of text.
