The Replacements - Hold My Life

The Replacements began

as a punk band, though over their career they became more of a general rock band, embracing ideas from older rock and roll and slower tempos to create a unique sound that influenced much of the alt/indie rock that emerged in the late '80s/'90s. The band was made up of singer/guitarist Paul Westerberg, bassist Tommy Stinson, guitarist Bob Stinson, and drummer Chris Mars, although towards the end of the '80s both Bob Stinson and Chris Mars were replaced. The band broke up in 1991, though they have had a number of reunion shows since 2011.

Listen to Hold My Life by The Replacements here.

This song is from their 1985

album Tim, which is widely acclaimed as a masterpiece of rock. It was clearly different from the hair metal pop AND stadium rock of the '80s, keeping to its roots in raw rock and roll, while still being willing to experiment with new sounds and harmonic ideas. This song opens the album, and is a good representation of the band during this time period. It's clearly slower than their early punk stuff, but the songwriting is much more complex and creative, and clearly stands out from all the other bands of this era.
