Garage Rock - Before they were Creedence Clearwater Revival!

in music •  5 months ago

Yesterday I read this excellent post by @vikthor. He discusses Creedence Clearwater Revival, also known as CCR - who they were and some of the songs they made popular. Now I'll mention who these guys were, before the hit the Big Time as CCR.

In 1966, the same guys were The Golliwogs. The did an album of music that could be considered Garage Rock. This song in particular, Fight Fire, has all the elements of Garage Rock. It has the same tone and style, and is built around a killer guitar riff, much like other Garage Rock songs I feature here on Steemit in my blog on Garage Rock. Check it out!

Let's go back 2 more years! In 1964, The Golliwogs recorded a song called "Little Girl (Does Your Momma Know)". This is a guitar based ballad, kind of just after the Doo Wop era and also during the Surf Music times. It seems that the singer, Tom Fogerty in this case, not John, is out with a much younger girl and worries that if her momma knew, she would die of fright!

For those who listen very closely and know the music from these times, you may notice, as I did, that this is pretty much a mash up of "Angel Baby" by Rosie and The Originals, and "Surfer Girl" by The Beach Boys. I'll include a YouTube video of the latter after The Golliwogs video of Little Girl. The video part of the Surfer Girl video shows three surfer girls surfing. Listen to both songs, back to back, and you can see the similarity. Also check out Angel Baby at the link above if you've never heard it. It's a classic oldie!

Now you know some of the history of Creedence Clearwater Revival when they were known as The Golliwogs. If you like cool rocking 60s songs like Fight Fire from 1966 then I invite you to Follow Me here on Steemit for more obscure Garage Rock songs from the mid 1960s. Thanks!
