Guest post by @ailindigo: Song of the day #1

in #music6 years ago

I want to share with you my favorite songs through this series of posts and by choosing them according to my mood at the moment, plus the possible meaning of their lyrics. These days I've had a very melancholic and broken-hearted mood and I think this song which is very especial to me can express that feeling very well.

Your Heart Is An Empty Room

This song is the sixth track from the fifth studio album Plans by the indie rock band Death Cab For Cutie, that was released on August 30th, 2005. It is a very beautifully sad song where lyrics and music match perfectly, written by the lead singer of the band Benjamin Gibbard, a song with soft noises that gives you many feels and makes you think about one of the most important themes in human history: love, and this song talks about the impossibility of unconditional love.

Lyrics

Burn it down 'til the embers smoke on the ground
And start new when your heart is an empty room
With walls of the deepest blue

Home's face
How it ages when you're away
And spring blooms and you find a love that's true
But you don't know what now to do
Cause the chase is all you know and she stopped running months ago

And all you see is where else you could be when you're at home
And out on the street are so many possibilities to not be alone

The flames and smoke climbed out of every window
And disappeared with everything that you held dear
But you shed not a single tear
For the things that you didn't need
Cause you knew you were finally free

Cause all you see is where else you could be when you're at home
And there on the street are so many possibilities to not be alone.

The song tells you about how different and even strange it feels when you start the process of dating again after being in a relationship, it's about the current constante search for the "soul mate", the perfect or ideal person to be with. It talks about that common stage in a relationship in which one may feel overwhelmed with the possibility of other, a better relationship more fulfilling, and also when people get hooked on the thrill of starting a new relationship, that initial stage where everything is ideal, without prejudices and suffering, instead of building the one they already have. It tells us about burning the current situation/relationship to the ground, because it's not good anymore, and upending it with a breakup/divorce, using the metaphor of fire as as a redeemer and as that initial passion we feel when in love and that we never want to end. It's about never being satisfied, when you're at home and wish being somewhere else having a better time, because outside are many opportunities to no feel alone. When you live in a house you collect objects that have a history or meaning, that have memories, but when people move from relationship to relationship in the search for a better thing instead of understanding that the perfect relationship is built with time and implies suffering, then there's nothing in the room.

I think this is a song that you should listen to if you're a fan of indie music, this is a great band of the genre and I highly recommend this album.
