RE: A Closer Look At John Coltrane's Giant Steps

in #music8 years ago (edited)

What is also interesting, is the fact that Coltrane´s composition is playing around the mediants of B major. B major, Eb major & G major. He is moving to them with a IIm7 - V7 chord progression to prepare them. Look up for mediants: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mediant - Such a ritch composition.

Thanks for pointing this out. I was thinking it, but got lost in that solo. I would interpret it this way: the D7 is a 5th of the G which is the 5th of the Bb which is the 5th of the in-key chord Eb. He is using these 5th of 5ths as passing chords to make the progression more interesting than just going from B to Eb.
