Heavy Metal Suggestions for this Winter - Summoning - About Frozen Shadows and a Long Glory

in #music7 years ago (edited)

Couple of weeks ago, I started a series of articles in which I'll present heavy metal bands from different subgenres that are best suitable for the upcoming gloomy and snowy days. The music we listen to usually depends on the current mood, but weather conditions and atmosphere outside can also influence our choice of one band over another.

When you imagine endless white landscapes, you'll often think of Scandinavian countries like Norway or Finland, or perhaps Russia. It shouldn't come as a surprise that bands that best capture the essence of winter through their music are inhabitants of these countries.

Asking what occasions are best suitable for listening of this kind of music?

  • Taking a walk through the snow covered woods (wearing a blanket over your shoulders like an aging king, watching over your kingdom)
  • Riding on an empty subway while passing by the beautiful white landscapes, or driving late at night trying to forget what's bothering you
  • Being curled up in a comfy chair covered in blankets, drinking hot chocolate beside the crackling fire
  • Reading epic fantasy book like Lord of the Rings or Game of Thrones
  • Writing a new story for your Steemit blog

In the first two parts of the series we took a better look at Wintersun and Agalloch so be sure to check them out.

Here is suggestion for today.

Summoning

Imagine you are in Middle Earth, marching across the misty mountains hearing screams of nazguls in the distance and about to fight against armies of orcs that are drawing near. Whether you are a fan of epic fantasy movies and books or not, this will probably send shivers down your spine.

Summoning is all about that. About capturing that atmosphere of dead winter lands, misty mountains and echoes of it's mighty inhabitants.

The band was formed in 1993 in Austria and has recorded seven studio albums since. It consists of Richard Lederer and Michael Gregor better known by their aliases Protector and Silenius. They can be classified as epic/atmospheric black metal and are without a doubt the pioneers of this genre, with whole bunch of new bands following their style and trying to create similar atmosphere.

As you might guess, their main and only inspiration when it comes to lyrics is Tolkien and his Middle Earth writings. So you'll hear songs about Khazad-dum, Dol Guldur, runes of power and battles and adventures that took place.

Each of the seven full-length albums they've recorded is a masterpiece for itself, so you can't go wrong whichever one you choose to start with (although I suggest Oath Bound).

In their interview for darkview Silenius said about the new album:

Beside that, we are working already for a new album. Everything started a year ago, when we looked through the remaining riffs from the last "Old Mornings Dawn" session. We still had some unfinished songs and a few isolated riffs remaining.

We took them and composed new music around them or took the riffs and added it to new material. At the moment we finished the recording session, but it will still take some time to finish the whole album, because we have to work out a lyrical concept and add the guitar lines to the music.

If you're still unsure about this band, maybe Gandalf the Grey will convince you.

This band is for all you hardcore metalheads and Tolkien lovers out there that you are willing to experiment and step outside your comfort zone. And you others, well you might just become fond of it as well if you give this band a shot. With epic landscapes and distant black metal guitar riffs, Summoning is truly a league on their own.

Here are couple of song suggestions:

Where forest stream went through the wood
And silent all the stands there stood
Of tall trees, moveless, hanging dark
With mottled shadows on their bark

No moon is there, no voice, no sound
Of beating heart; a sight profound
Once in each age as each age dies
Alone is heard. Far, far it lies

Hi , nice post , came here from the #postpromotion chat. Good read , I actually went down through everything saw the poem read it , played the music and went back to the beginning to read through everything , well written , nice and informative.

One thing I have to ask is how did you place those lines , I'm missing a bit of formating in my posts and that is one important thing.
And if you could check my second post I would truly appreciate it!
