Havent talked about movies for a while, eh? Haha..

Well this is a different one i watched in the theater the other day... Alone.

But enough about my sad life. 😂 . What emotions did the movie give me?

Did i laugh, was i entertained, shocked, did i get constipated?

Its actually a little bit of each. I usually like these types of movies. I went in expecting a more serious "2002 - Undercover brother" from the promotion material i saw and it turned out to be something else....

What i got was a tonally undefined mess. The movie jumps from one scene that might be serious in tone, to something pretty silly. Even the contrast in the characters is very odd. You have the main good guys that are portrayed as very grounded to the main bad guys that are very caricatured versions of what ever they are supposed to be.
The director put a lot of work, and i mean a lot, to portray the black community, at that time, as realistically as possible. Some scenes make you feel like you are watching a Malcolm X biopic. Thats how serious the tone was in those scenes.

The movie tries to tell a very serious story about racism in a small town of Colorado Springs, but decides to put across a message by caricaturing the other side in this case, the KKK.

I find that to be a big misstep and wasted potential since having compelling antagonists adds to the quality of the plot.
Now, the movie starts a bit odd. The main character skipping ranks, in what seemed days after joining the Police department. From a rookie to a leading detective. The movie presents that in a slightly "Dont take it serious" way.
I kind of disliked that, but its a minor thing.

Im not going to spoil the story much here but basically what this movie does is pull you in slowly and deceptively,

presenting itself as a "lets kick some racist ass" and then half way through, it slaps you across the face with what its actually about...

I will spoil it a bit here, but it shouldn't surprise you....

The whole movie is basically an excuse to imply that Trump is a racist or at least supports racists.

Im not a Trump supporter, since i do not live in the US, nor do i have any positive or negative opinions of him. "Bush, Clinton, Obama, or Trump".... makes little difference to me.

I noticed this about half the way into the movie. There was a scene with the... Grand Wizard (or whats it called) of the KKK, that is a real guy (caricatured), and at one point he actually says the exact slogan of the Trump campaign.

  1. They could have changed the words around a bit, they didnt. "Make America great again" is the exact quote
  2. The context in which this was said was after talking about segregating the black population.

After that it was pretty clear what i was in for. What this was really about. I usually love these kinds of movies. Seeing people overcome diversity, hate, racism and then coming out stronger really shows the strength of the human spirit and makes for some great movies.
But here... As i said, in the end, this turned in a Trump bash movie. It even feels unpolished in many parts. The parts of the movie where some black activist speaks, or where a serious story was told, it feels polished, but everything else felt rushed, like they didnt care about the actual plot but rather only for the "preaching" parts.

The movie wraps up, fine i guess and everyone is happy... But still, a cross is burned by the KKK on a hill outside the main characters building as to show that people like that are still here... An ok ending.

So just before the credits roll, they do something i really disliked. They put on video footage of some tragic riots that happened in 2017 i think. Where a car drives into a group of people. That footage tied into Trump speaking on the incident in what seemed to me a neutral way and then the KKK grand Wizard talking about Trump and how he supports him. Movie makes some comments after that as well, but i cant remember exactly.

In the end, a movie that could have either been funny, or compelling, or even both, turned into a propaganda flick against the current president of a country.

I never understood this. Couldnt you just have a message told by your movie that racism is bad and "why cant we be friends", and lets hold hands together?
No, what this movie does imo, is create even more division between people and i bet you that you will have people coming out of the theater, not empowered or ready to spread love and understanding, but rather angry and vengeful.

Final thoughts:

I mean this would have been an ok movie, maybe even above average, had it not been clearly made for one purpose. Theres really not many standout scenes, or big laughs, but its competent. The parts that are supposed to be touching, that raise awareness about the movies message would have been so much more potent had the movie not gone so stupidly political.

When a movie presents itself as one thing and then tries to feed me something political, very aggressively, i dislike that. Makes me feel cheated.

I give this movie a

"Did ya know Trumps a racist? Well did ya?! DID YA?! / 10

Ill see you guys around...
