Ant Man and the Wasp or how Quantum put my Quantum in a Quantum and was really Quantuming my Quantum. (Comedy Open Mic Round #22)

So I JUST made a plan to have a gaming post every Monday, but then I realized I see movies on the weekends, so I guess pbbbbbt to that.

So I'm a Marvel fan it should be clear. I never really got into comics as a kid though, I just heard about the bigger events from friends and read anything i could find on the comic rack while my parents shopped at the grocery store.

I know better than to search comic rack. Instead here's the cutest license free ape photo that comes up when you search for puppy.

My favorites were Spider-Man, Batman, and What-ifs. Since grocery stores only rarely updated their shelves I couldn't actually read any of the big cross over events, so my knowledge of comics is scattered at best. I bring all this up to make it clear: I came into the MCU as a dilettante. I am not an expert on Marvel I just like them, and they have got me. I am in the bag at this point, film wise.

And I'm a parent of a small child, so it's a big deal to get to see one of them. So going forward I'm formalizing my rating system for films.

If I have never heard of you and your trailer has a record scratch, "Walking on Sunshine", or the Inception blap in it, I'm not going. You get negative billions and billions of stars. Stop it.

If I have heard of you, you're not Marvel, and you have any of that, you get a negative one star. I'll wait for reviews and maybe watch you on Video.

If you're Marvel I'll see the film. If it's bad though, and I mean really bad, that's a strike. Three strikes and you're out.

So far there is one strike.

Its subtitle rhymes with "The Dark World" in a song written by someone bad at rhyming.

So all that said, Ant man is not a strike. But it's not exactly great either.

That one's gonna come in handy in general I think. Also Spoilers from here on out. Maybe I should've put that on the sign...

The plot is actually really good. Ghost is cool and powerful but also relatively limited in scope. The plot is actually somewhat reminiscent of a Coen brothers film, specifically the Royal Tenenbaums, where the plot has a through line (Old man tries to get his wife back) but has a lot of sub stories going on at the same time weaving in and out of that central narrative.

The humor is still in full effect and is always very welcome. In fact where this film falls down is when it forgets to be a comedy. We could have used a few more direct undercuts of the exposition like Scott's cell phone call. Instead we usually just get lampshades hung and you can only do that so many times.

Sorry, THEY can only do it so many times. I, on the other hand, am invincible!

In conclusion: Good film, not great. What the hell did Janet eat? What was she hunting with that spear thing? How did she know about the waterbears!? Did she just remember that from the first time? Did she happen to get stuck with them too!?

Also, am I going nuts or could Blizzard sue them over Ghost? Google Starcraft ghost and let me know what you think in the comments below.
