Gayo tourism is not only about coffee, Lake Lut Tawar, or the world-famous Saman dance. There are many other aspects of Gayo tourism that can be explored, one of which is Mount Burni Telong located in Wih Pesam District, Bener Meriah Regency, Aceh (Indonesia).

Burni Telong is one of the mountains in Aceh that is 2,624 meters above sea level. This mountain is one of the tourist mountains that can be climbed by amateur climbers like me. Tourists can bring their families for a weekend here without the need for special preparation like professional climbers.

The climb starts from the Burni Telong Ranger Post, which is a treat for climbers. Here climbers must report to the Ranger Post. Guides, tents, and backpackers are also available here if needed. Oh yes, reporting to the Ranger Post before climbing is mandatory to record climbers in case something dangerous happens.

There are eight climbing routes to the peak of Mount Burni Telong. From the Ranger Post, climbers take the path up to Punti Rimba, then arrive at Shelter 1. From the Ranger Post to Shelter 2 about 30 minutes later, full of mini coffee plantations on the left and right. From the Ranger Post to the peak, the path continues to climb, there is no flat climbing path.

From Shelter 2, climbers continue their journey to the Spring. Here climbers usually add to their reserves of clean and cool natural water. I had a chance to drink the water from there and it tasted very natural, strong with the aroma of roots and wood. It's a strange taste, though.

From the Spring Post, climbers can continue their journey to Shelter 3 and spend the night there. All climbers spend the night here so it is very crowded, just like a night market in the dark.

The climb to the peak of Burni Telong starts at 3 am in the midst of a cold air attack. All climbers are advised to wear headlamps because the climbing route is not visible. Be careful of the gravel that could fall from above. If you hear the scream "booom...!" It means that the climber below must be alert.

About an hour through the dense forest path, climbers will arrive at the Cave of Regret. I don't know why it is called the Cave of Regret. Maybe climbers who don't go up will regret it for the rest of their lives.

In the Cave of Regret, this is the main difficulty of climbing because you have to climb a cliff with a slope of up to 45 degrees. I am grateful that I am diligent in exercising because both my hands are able to support my body weight. I can even hang on the cliff like a professional climber.

Around 05.00 in the morning, climbers just arrived at the Cempege Peak of Mount Burni Telong. When we reached the peak, the surrounding scenery was still covered in white clouds. According to several students who have climbed dozens of times, Burni Telong is always covered in fog so it looks like a land above the clouds.

We spent about an hour at the peak before deciding to go down again. The blanket of fog prevented us from enjoying the sunrise. As far as the eye could see, there was only white fog.

When going down, it takes physical strength because the terrain is also difficult. The sun was already shining brightly so that climbers could enjoy the natural beauty of the surroundings. I just realized, there are many edelweiss around. But don't be naughty to pick. Taking edelweiss is strictly prohibited!

Menuju Negeri di Atas Awan: Gunung Burni Telong

Wisata Gayo bukan hanya kopi, Danau Lut Tawar, atau seni tari saman yang sudah mendunia. Banyak sisi lain pariwisata Gayo yang bisa diekplorasi, salah satunya adalah gunung Burni Telong yang terletak di Kecamatan Wih Pesam Kabupaten Bener Meriah, Aceh (Indonesia).
Burni Telong merupakan salah satu gunung di Aceh yang berada di ketinggian 2.624 meter di atas permukaan laut. Gunung ini menjadi salah satu gunung wisata yang bisa didaki oleh pendaki amatir seperti saya. Wisatawan bisa membawa keluarga berakhir pekan di sini tanpa perlu persiapan khusus layaknya pendaki profesional.

Pendakian dimulai dari Pos Ranger Burni Telong sudah memanjakan mata pendaki. Di sini para pendaki harus melaporkan ke Pos Ranger. Di sini juga tersedia guide, tenda, dan pemanggul ransel bila dibutuhkan. Oh ya, melapor ke Pos Ranger sebelum pendakian wajib hukumnya untuk mendata para pendaki bila terjadi sesuatu yang membahayakan.

Ada delapan jalur pendakian menuju puncak Gunung Burni Telong. Dari Pos Ranger, pendaki menempuh jalan mendaki menuju Punti Rimba, kemudian sampai di Shelter 1. Dari Pos Ranger sampai Sehlter 2 sekitar 30 menit kemudian, penuh dengan kebun kopi mini di kiri dan kanan. Dari Pos Ranger sampai ke puncak, jalurnya menanjak terus, tidak ada jalur pendakian yang datar.

Dari Shelter 2, pendaki melanjutkan perjalan menuju Mata Air. Di sini biasanya pendaki menambah cadangan air alami yang bersih dan sejuk. Saya sempat meminum air situ dan rasanya sangat alami, kuat dengan aroma akar dan kayu. Aneh juga sih, rasanya.

Dari Pos Mata Air, pendaki bisa melanjutkan perjalanan ke Shelter 3 dan bermalam di sana. Semua pendaki bermalam di sini sehingga sangat ramai, tak ubahnya seperti pasar malam dalam kegelapan.

Pendakian ke puncak Burni Telong dimulai pukul 3 pagi di tengah serbuan udara dingin. Semua pendaki disarankan memakai lampu di kepala karena jalur pendakian tidak terlihat. Hati-hati terhadap batu kerikil yang bisa saja jatuh dari atas. Kalau mendengar teriakan “booom….!” Berarti pendaki di bawahnya harus waspada.

Sekitar satu jam menembus jalur hutan lembat, pendaki akan sampai di Gua Penyesalan. Entah kenapa dinamakan Gua Penyesalan. Mungkin pendaki yang tidak naik ke atas akan menyesal seumur hidup.

Di Gua Penyesalan inilah kesulitan utama pendakian karena harus naik tebing dengan tingkat kemiringan sampai 45 derajat. Saya bersyukur karena rajin fitnes karena kedua tangan saya mampu menahan berat badan. Bahkan saya bisa bergantung di tebing layaknya pendaki profesional.

Sekitar pukul 05.00 pagi, pendaki baru sampai di Puncak Cempege Gunung Burni Telong. Ketika kami sampai di puncak, pemandangan di sekitarnya masih tertutup awan putih. Kata beberapa mahasiswa yang sudah mendaki puluhan kali, Burni Telong memang selalu diselimuti kabut sehingga terlihat seperti negeri di atas awan.

Kami menghabiskan waktu sekitar satu jam di puncak sebelum memutuskan turun lagi. Selimut kabut menghalangi kami menikmati sunrise. Sejauh mata memandang hanya kabut putih saja.

Jam 5.00 subuh kami sampai di puncak Burni Telong. Namanya Puncak Cempege. Di sekitarnya tertutupi kabut putih yang menghalangi kami melihat matahri terbit.

Ketika turun, butuh kekuatan fisik karena medannya juga berat. Matahari sudah bersinar terang sehingga pendaki bisa menikmati keindahan alam sekitar. Saya baru sadar, banyak edelweiss di sekitarnya. Tapi jangan nakal untuk memetik. Mengambil edelweiss sangat dilarang!
