So I Fixed An $800 Harley Davidson Radio Today
I had a customer who had the auxiliary port on his stock radio break internally. Otherwise the radio was fine and worked great. To replace this radio is stupid expensive from the Motor Company. About $800 USD.
I had a donor radio that was broken so I decided to give it a shot fixing it.
Here is the broken port.
Whats left of the old port.
Soldering station.
The hardest part was de-soldering the donor port. Had to use copper wick and flux with the soldering iron to get it off.
Finally it came loose.
A little solder and flux.
Tacked securely back on the board.
All Fixed.
I'm a Hustler.
You have good hands :) Very good job.
You saved him some money. Nice job!!
Oh I'm still gonna charge him the $800.
Naw! I wouldn't do that!
We would have put an aftermarket radio in for about $350 if that one was bricked.
Yeah man, thats my favorite part of the trade. I enjoy chasing and repairing electrical faults, especially circuit boards like this that others refuse to even look at.
Good job🤘
Thanks Ed. Lots of mechanics are scared of electrical work. Its cleaner and easier most of the time (if you can read a wiring diagram) than working on powertrain stuff.
Thats awesome man! Seems to be harder and harder to find anyone willing to do electronic repair, default seems to be just order a new one, cost be damned.
Thats the case with mechanical failures too now sadly. We used to measure cylinders and send them to the machine shop. Now just replace......
