Space Thruster Technology for Motorcycles To Avoid Low Side Crash!
Low Side Crash:
Usually on curves, when the rear or front tyre of the motorcycle slips while tilting, it leads to a sliding crash. This is known as Low Side.
You can see an example of Low Side crash in the video below:
Avoiding it:
There's normally nothing much we can do if the tire decides to give up on us when we are in a tilted position apart from changing our body position, controling the throttle and brakes and trying to avoid the crash. But, its rarely that we come out of such situations safely.
The Fix:
The news is that Bosch has been testing an anti-slide technology that could stop the motorcyclists from toppling due to low side crashes.
The technology used is quite simple: You're peacefully going at decent speeds and tilt on a curve. Suddenly you spot gravel on the curve and aren't able to avoid it. The tires start slipping on the gravel and you start low siding. Suddenly, the thrusters get activated and starts venting out pressurized gas through the nozzles which counteracts the sliding wheel and helps the bike repulse.
The Downsides:
This is a one time use just like an airbag system. Every time the thruster gets used up, you'll have to get new ones. That might cost a bomb but it sure is a good way to avoid a crash and will also save lives.
This is a new technology that's just undergoing its first phase of tests. Bosch may come up with reusable technology in the future.
Here's a video of it in action:
Conclusion:
Motorcycling safety and convenience seems to be evolving faster than ever. With technology like ABS, Traction Control, Space Thrusters, Airbags in Jackets, Air Conditioners in helmets, Motorcycling will start attracting the masses who have been staying away from it mainly due to the risks involved and various other comfort reasons.
All in all, this would mean bigger percentage of bikes on the roads than cars which would result in reduction in pollution, less road congestions and more awareness towards safety of bikers.Cheers!
