Hard work is an essential ingredient for success in any kind of work, also is smart work. The difference between a bull and an ant is the fact that a bull works really hard whenever it is needed on the field while the ant works hard and smart, they work when it is needed and at the right place.
Luck is a product of hard work and smart work combined with proper timing. The myth that luck comes to people without doing anything has made so many people believe that they accomplish without doing anything, which is not true.
Let's try something; go to any organisation and ask those who are the top how hard they work and you will realise that they are the hardest workers. They are the most dedicated, most committed, also they work smart.
There are lazy people who do not want to get stretched or fired at all, they believe that they have to get a job. They are so lazy, they do not want to do anything.
Hard work is cannot be hidden. In any organisation or in groups of friends, it is not difficult to identify people who work hard because it comes with a reward. Just as hard work remains a priority, smart work is a necessity. Working hard alone doesn't do it, you can work hard without having a reward but you can work smart and enjoy a lot of benefits. The difference between a factory worker and a chairman board of trustee in the same company is smart work.
My Father will always tell me, your lazy boots will never walk far unless you get new boots of hard work.

@gbenga true enough, both hard work and smart work go hand in hand and that is why we got to be careful as to when to use what.

I totally agree. Luck, most of the time is a product of hardwork + proper timing. You must be smart to work out the time, otherwise hardwork amounts to nothing

Well hard work at times goes unnoticed, sometimes people who are more vast tend to enjoy the hardwork done by others simply because they are more visible, well i guess to keep trying will surely do it.

That's right... Though we live in a partial life where things aren't equal which made some people privileged enough and met reaches in their fathers house.. They don't know what hard work is, they hardly read while in school. Why? They believe they have inheritance to embark on. People like that at the end mismanage opportunity and ruin everything due to laziness.
But analysing those who have grown from grass to grace, we will understand they have gone through a lot of Hard work, Smart work and Tough times.
