Truly Once in a Blue Moon Event to Occur on 31 Jan 2018
Three special occurrences relating to our Moon are expected on 31st January 2018. These are a lunar eclipse, a supermoon and a blue moon! The last time a similar event has occurred was in 1866 - about 152 years ago.
A lunar eclipse occurs when the Moon disappears into the Earth's shadow. During a total lunar eclipse, the moon can take on a reddish hue and is often referred to as a Blood Moon. This occurrence will be the year's first lunar eclipse and the rare incidence of 2 full moons in a single month. This phenomenon of 2 moons occurring in a single month is referred to as a Blue Moon occurrence.
Blue and Red Moons have regular references in popular culture in the form of songs, books and movies. We can expect a deluge of references to this exceptional phenomenon very soon.
Since the full Moon also coincides with it being at the closest point to Earth, it is also then referred to as a SuperMoon!
Be on the lookout for this astronomical occurrence that only occurs once in a while or 'Blue Moon'!
