Monomad Photography Contest ~ St. Michael's Golden-Domed Monastery
My entry for the #monomad daily contest is a picture of Orthodox monastery named after Archangel Michael in Kyiv. And for Ukrainians, St. Michael's Golden-Domed Monastery is not only a sign of faith or religion, but a symbol of non-broken spirit and freedom.
After the capital of Ukraine was moved from Kharkiv to Kyiv, in 1934 the Soviet governors decided to eliminate, destroy the monastery, that was probably constructed in 11 century. Before that its unique frescos, mosaics etc were given to museums of Moscow, St. Petersburg (Leningrad) and others.
Only after Ukraine get its independence church community started a process of reconstruction.
In December 2013, when the terrible dispersal of the peaceful protesters began in the night on the Maidan square in Kyiv, it was the only that opened his doors to those unarmed people who could escape from armed special bombers. It ringing bells woke up Kyiv...
