Mining Steem?

Edit:Nevermind found my answer, but it seems no you can't mine Steem any longer sadly, probably because the workarounds people were finding, anyway I'll leave this post up for anyone wondering the same thing.

Original Post: Is mining Steem still a thing? Or is now the only thing similar to mining, witnessing? I can't find any article on mining steem within the last month and the way I set it up is either wrong, or doesn't work because I need to be a witness account. I synced to the block-chain, but the only messages I receive are about getting new blocks. Please let me know before I pound my head against the wall for another few hours.
