Stony-Iron meteorites: deep but not that deep...

in #meteorites7 years ago

These comprise the same nickle enriched iron but also have roughly 50% rock suspended in the iron matrix.

Of this group, the pallasite meteorites are extremely striking, when the rock portion comprises olivene crystals in their gem quality form, peridote.

These also are the shattered remains of large differentiated asteroids and dwarf planets, but they don't come from the core, like the iron meteorites.

The core is the most dense and heaviest inner part of a planet and usually made solely of iron and other heavy metals. It is surrounded by a thick mantle and then the outermost crust.

Stony-Iron meteorites are bits and pieces of broken mantle and the pallasites are more likely from the core mantle boundary. Especially the ones that contain proportionately more iron than rock crystals.

Mesosiderites are more likely from the mantle proper and have proportionately less iron as a matrix.

They therefore originate deep within an asteroid or planet but not its center.

The kimberlite eruptions we have on earth also bring up material from within the earths mantle and similarly these contain olivene and peridote crystals.

The links below cover some of what we have learned about kimberlites in our pursuit of diamonds.
