He acquired his super power when it was given by the last surviving elite Nova Corps, Rhomann Dey both power and uniform. He didn't know how to use them but later he able to control them and named himself as Nova, fighting supervillains and team up with Spider-Man. At first he kept his secret and identity but he decide to reveal it to his family.Source here
