The ancient ruins of Mahasthangarh are the ancient capital of the region, Pundranagar. A silent witness in the glorious history of a lengthy two and a half thousand years. The ruins of the city is situated 13km north of Bogra district on the west bank of the Karatoya. Archaeological evidence suggests that for several centuries, this place was the capital of the mighty Maurya, Gupta and Pala rulers, and later the Hindu parantars. Outside the fort, there are many ancient directions of north, west, south and southwest of 7/8 kilometers, which bear witness to the sub-city. It is to be noted that the famous Chinese traveler, Huiyan Song, visited Pundranagar (639-645) while traveling to India. The famous British archaeologist Sir Alexander Cunningham discovered the ruins of Mahasthan average in 1879 AD as Pundu Nagar, described by Fuen Sang.
