El Loco
Daniel Barrera Barrera, conocido como "El Loco" o "Mad Barrera", es un ex narcotraficante sospechoso de ser el jefe del narcotráfico en las llanuras orientales de Colombia. Según un artículo de la Revista Semana, Barrera inició sus actividades de drogas ilegales en San José del Guaviare en los años 80 con el apoyo de su hermano Omar Barrera. El 7 de febrero de 1990 Barrera fue arrestado por cargos de drogas por parte de las autoridades colombianas. Después de unos meses, en octubre de ese mismo año, Barrera escapó de la cárcel. Según el servicio de inteligencia DIJIN de la Policía Nacional de Colombia, Barrera sobornó a numerosos policías colombianos para mantener su emporio de drogas en Bogotá. US $ 7,7 millones (incluyendo US $ 2,7 millones por el gobierno colombiano) se ofreció a cualquiera que pudiera capturarlo en los Estados Unidos. El Loco finalmente fue arrestado en San Cristóbal, Venezuela el 18 de septiembre de 2012 después de traficar drogas por más de 20 años. Cuando fue capturado, el presidente colombiano Juan Manuel Santos lo describió como "quizás el pivote más buscado en los últimos tiempos". Todas sus propiedades en Columbia, por un valor estimado de US $ 28 millones, fueron confiscadas por el gobierno colombiano.
Extraditado en julio de 2013 desde Colombia a Estados Unidos, enfrentó juicio por cargos de narcotráfico y lavado de dinero. Después de declararse culpable de varios cargos de drogas y conspiración para blanquear dinero, El Loco fue sentenciado a 35 años en una prisión estadounidense en julio de 2016 por el juez de distrito estadounidense Gregory Woods en Manhattan. Woods, que también multó a Barrera con 10 millones de dólares y le ordenó que perdiera la misma cantidad, calificó al colombiano de "un hombre inteligente, talentoso, tal vez dotado" que pasó de trabajar como granjero a dirigir una organización violenta de tráfico de drogas.
