Mushrooms are plants that do not have chlorophyll (leaf green matter) so can not produce their own food through photosynthesis. Mushrooms live by taking food substances and starch compounds from other organisms. So .., mushroom life depends on other organisms so often we encounter mushrooms stuck to the rotted tree trunks.
