Travel Bloggers Unite - We Need A Decentralized Alternative To Airbnb!

This is the last draw! Airbnb has to go away!!!

When we started traveling for our travel project For 91 Days over 7 years ago, the term Travel Bogger was just born and something like a Digital Nomad wasn't heard of. Back in the days we were looking for apartments on Craigslist or consulted Facebook or Twitter, with success. I know it's old school but it worked and we could find some incredible places like half a mansion where we lived in for our For 91 Days in Savannah, Georgia for an inredible price.

Then there was the birth of Airbnb and it was a blessing for us. No more fear of loosing deposit money, you get to read reviews of your host and the place up front, we loved it.

But over the years things changed at Airbnb, it became a nightmare when they steered away from private apartments, where the owner rents a room or the entire place when they're not in town. Now you'll find agencies listing over a hundred properties on the platform.

It changes entire neighborhoods. For example we rented an apartment in Alfama, Lisbon but only because we had a voucher which gave us 2 nights in a decent place. BUT, it was one of the worst Airbnb experiences ever. So many things went wrong, there is not one person being responsible. We couldn't get in touch with anyone when the internet was down. The check-out was far from being smooth. It felt like the agency hired an agency which hired and agency.

On top of it Alfama is now one giant hotel spread out through the entire neighborhood. Portuguese people are being forced out to make room for even more Airbnb Apartments. The locals still living there hate us tourists staying there. They're taking their frustration to the walls as graffiti:

And I understand I would feel the same way. And I do feel guilty for being part of the problem. Yes Airbnb is so convenient but I think NOW is the time for a decentralized, ethical vacation rental platform to take Airbnb's place.

There are some interesting projects on the blockchain like CriptoCribs and https://cryptobnb.io/. I've reached out to both platforms asking about their ethics but I haven't heard back from them yet. We need a platforms which values neighborhoods instead of selling them out.

Not too long ago we scraped together all of our savings and retirement funds to buy an apartment in Valencia, Spain! Our favorite city on this earth. Because after traveling for 4 years nonstop and not having a permanent address presented itself with some problems. We needed to have an address and place where we can relax and and work if we're not on the road.

And yes - we have it listed on Airbnb. But we feel so sick about it. And as hosts we're getting now blackmailed by the platform to turn on Instabooking, to turn our private apartment into a hotel, where we don't have any say who is staying in our place. Otherwise our apartment will be on the bottom for Valencia listings. Sorry Airbnb, this is our real home with our real things in there. NO WE ARE NOT A HOTEL!

And it also started in Valencias as well in our neighborhood, on Sunday afternoon when it's time to check out we hearthe constant sound of trolleys of the checked out guests walking over to the Metro station.

So right now, we're looking for an alternative but in the meantime we're looking to rent out our apartment to other Digital Nomads / Travel Bloggers without Airbnb and for long term only!

Take a look:

It's our baby - we bought and fully renovated it 2 years ago, if you would like to read more about it, let us know. And yes, we would accept cryptocurrencies (SBD of course too) as a payment method.

If you're interested and would like to know more about it, get in touch with us via our Discord Travel Group. And if you hear about a great alternative to Airbnb, please leave comment.

How do you feel about Airbnb these days?

Sort:

A decentralized Uber next? Or is that project in the pipelines? Hahaha
However, in all seriousness, we can only speak from our experience of using Airbnb as a short-term (one week max) let. We only had good experiences, but we know and read about the problems that you have addressed. There is no personal touch anymore and locals are getting fed up that their neighbors change every day it seems. They find their safety has been compromised. Some big corporations have changed their original values and it's a shame. Like Starbucks, love their eco-friendly and we're different stance, but now they sold their soul and become 'the Apple of coffee'. Yet, we will still buy the overpriced coffee as it's sadly one of the few places Becca can get a soya based drink conveniently. Thanks for reading this post and good to know your place is there for whenever we decide to visit Valencia!

Decentralize everything and integrate a safety measures so you know to whom you rent out / rent from. I really hope we can cut out profit hungry companies from the service industry. We honestly try to stay away from chains as much as we can but sometimes you're forced into - for example in Tokyo Starbucks was one of the only hones to give foreigners access to internet.

Yes, let us know if you're planning trip to Valencia!!!!!

I only used airbnb once so far – to rent a place for a week in Russia. It worked fine for me, but I can perfectly imagine what you are talking about. I guess a big centralized company is bound so sell itself out for big(ger) bucks sooner or later and thus making it impossible to participate for the people that it was initially created for: private individuals trying to rent out their place while they are away or to rent out a spare room they have. As you said – it's high time for an alternative.

The idea behind Airbnb is great and it's so convenient and easy to use but yes, it's going in the wrong direction. Great to meet like-minded people!!!!

This is such a good post. Some valid and interesting points about Air BnB. I haven't used it for ages but traveled around Europe with it a few years back and had wonderful experiences. I think the changes you speak about came in afterwards. I had no idea. An ethical version is a brilliant concept. I hope that you can get something off the ground.

Thank you for your supporting words -we're on the look out for alternatives. Something which maybe re-invests into neighborhoods, ensuring locals are able to stay.

I love that. My council is gentrifying as we speak and it breaks my heart to see all the people disadvantaged by it

Yeah man!! Agree, i'm sick of it also. I guess I heard something like that already, steembnb maybe, or something close to it, dont remeber exactly.

SteemBnB is such a great idea - I've joined their Discord Group! Thank you for the tip.

Don't you think that's more of a problem with capitalism in general? If airbnb disappeared, something else would take it's place. Gentrification happens in all kinds of ways.
As what happens through airbnb is just a symptom of what's wrong with human behavior. Getting an alternative feels like popping an Aspirin against headache whilst the tumor still sits in ones brain. I don't have a cure for that yet tho.

Besides the agencies also private persons buy several apartments in city centres for airbnb which drives up the rents.
So imo an alternative wouldn't fix those problems BUT I think decentralization in general and also in this particular case can definitely change the way people think! :)

I used airbnb before (only for private apartments) - I'll check out your mentioned sites!

Overall a very good article and you have a point. Also your apartment looks great (checked it out on your website)! If I feel like a long term stay in Valencia, I now know whom to get in contact with :)

All the best,
yourmate

I'm hoping for an ethical alternative .... a copy or a platform accepting crypto but having the same hunger for profit ... we're not interested.

Again, something ethical, helping inner cities to keep it balanced! Have healthy tourism locals can cope with.

that'd be great and sure needs a change in many minds. I think it's possible - decentralization is a good trend towards that :)

Airbnb is still very convenient, but the impact they’ve had on many cities while not giving back to those places especially doesn’t sit well with me.

I’d love to stay at your place someday! It looks amazing :-)

We would be more than happy and yes, I agree Airbnb is so convenient!!! I'll keep digging for an alternative!!!
