Dengue is fast emerging pandemic-prone viral disease in many parts of the world. Dengue flourishes in urban poor areas, suburbs and the countryside but also affects more affluent neighbourhoods in tropical and subtropical countries.

Dengue is a mosquito-borne viral infection causing a severe flu-like illness and, sometimes causing a potentially lethal complication called severe dengue. The incidence of dengue has increased 30-fold over the last 50 years. Up to 50-100 million infections are now estimated to occur annually in over 100 endemic countries, putting almost half of the world’s population at risk.

For the past few weeks here in Negros Dengue cases was reported that victim of this viral disease is rapidly increasing. Medical practitioners from both public and private hospitals are working together to address the up-sizing number of patients appearing everyday to have some consultation.

Most of the patient have symptoms of Dengue, where higher volume belongs to children ranges from 4-11 years old. Local news of Bacolod City always updating the report of escalated issues about Dengue. One of the reason why mosquitoes are spreading anywhere. Because the rainy season just started already that allows this dengue carrier flying insects to lay more eggs in any stagnant water.

The baranggay officials from different sector do some precautionary measure like mosquito fogging. A procedure where they used machine called " mosquito fogger " to kill adult dengue carrier mosquitoes. The insecticide used in the mosquito fogging is a synthetic pyrethroid which is similar to pest and insect control canister we bought from supermarket displayed on the shelves. Nothing to worry about the fog, because it safe according to World Health Organization.

Criteria for Dengue and Warning Signs

Probable Dengue

live/travel to dengue endemic area - Fever and two of the following criteria:

• Nausea, vomiting
• Rash
• Aches and pain
• Tourniquet test positive
• Leukopenia
• Any Warning signs

Take note: Laboratory confirmed dengue ( Important when no sign of plasma leakage )

Warning Signs

• Abdominal pain
• Persistent vomiting
• Clinical fluid accumulation
• Mucosal bleed
• Lethargy, restlessness
• Liver enlargement 2 cm
• Laboratory : increase in HCT concurrent w/ rapid decrease in platelet count

Take note : requiring strict observation and medical intervention

Criteria for severe Dengue/severe plasma leakage leads to :

• Shock ( DSS )
• Fluid accumulation with respiratory distress
• Severe internal bleeding

Common Signs and Symptoms of Dengue Fever

caused by virus and transmitted by mosquitoes

1. Body Ache
2. Severe pain in eyes
3. Severe head ache
4. Back Pain
5. Exhaustion
6. Redness of skin
7. Fullness of stomach with water
8. Acute Fever

Take note : Go to the nearest hospital immediately in case of above symptoms, it could be a Dengue Fever.

As a responsible neighborhood the best thing that we can do to lessen uprising cases of Dengue is to start cleaning our surroundings. Removed the stagnant water from possible breeding area for mosquitoes. Trim the lawn and removed trashes to keep your ground away from hiding mosquitoes. Change also the water from your vases time to time. These things are minor issues but at the later part can raise to a cases the might put your life at risks.
