Staying Informed Fnding a Source for News

in #life7 years ago

One of the things I find particularly challenging about working from home is staying informed on what is going on in the world. I am, by no means, a news junkie. In fact, I can't watch television news, mostly because I worked in it, and I don't trust them. I know how they make choices about what goes on air, and I know what motivates those choices. They are smart people who know lots about making television, and attracting viewers. I like them. I do. But I don't trust them! (Sorry, TV News friends.) I do enjoy reading the occasion newspaper. It's not that I trust them more. They need to sell advertising and attract an audience, too. But newspapers have more space in which to tell a story. They give you more details, more back story, more information. At least some of them do. But it takes way too much time to read a newspaper every day to keep up with the News. Writing, editing, parenting. I don't have that kind of time.

To be perfectly honest, I stay informed by checking Steemit. I know, it is surprising that I would admit such a thing for all to read. I am not recommending that all intelligent, informed, literate people abandon their trusted news source and begin relying on Steemit to stay on top of things. Just people like me. Busy. Tired. A wee bit lazy. And I am not talking about just catching up on the daily (sometimes hourly) status updates of your average friend. But there are always a few key friends who talk about the News. They mention something they read or heard, whatever is attention grabbing that day. Some are "Entertainment News" friends. Latest movies, concerts etc. Others "Sports News" friends. How much did the Flames lose by this time?  If any of those friends comment on something I would like to know more about, I Google it. If I am extremely lucky, they have attached a link to their comment. In this way, I almost always know what going on. And the best part is, I decide which stories I get informed about, instead of someone else making that decision for me. And I never have to wait until the end of an hour long newscast to find out what common, everyday dinner food may be deadly to my grandchildren. Steemit. A source for news? Well, it may not be your number one choice. But for this busy old man, it works.

PS: I did not mean to offend any News people with this post. After all, my Steemit friends need to get their info from somewhere, don't they?
