Coffee Lovers - Today's Lesson #1: How To Make And Taste Caffe' Latte?

in #life6 years ago

As i'm about to graduate from a Coffee and Barista Academy, i would like to share with you steemians some basic knowledge of different types of coffee drinks and beverages, this will enable you to make them yourself if you have an espresso machine or even have more knowledge on coffee drinks.

What is Caffe' Latte?
The term caffe' latte comes from the Italian "Caffe e Latte", which means "coffee and milk". Never confuse it with French's "Cafe' Au Lait", though there is some similarity.

Caffe' latte is a milk beverage made up of espresso and steamed milk.

How to make Caffe' Latte?
Let's assume that you have an espresso machine.

Turn on your espresso machine to get ready for a period of between 15-30 minutes depending on the operating condition of the machine.

To check whether the machine is ready, make sure that the pointers/needles in the pressure gauge that is built on the front of the machine are pointing to the green marks. The lower pointer is for the boiler pressure, while the other pointer is for the pump operating pressure. Or you can check the machine by opening the steam wand to full pressure and see the results.

Let's get started.....

~ Pour cold whole milk in a cold steaming pitcher up to 1/3 of the pitcher. We are using whole milk because it has a creamier taste than skimmed milk.

~ Pull a double shot of an espresso in an espresso cup or any small cup and then pour it into a latte glass as recommended.

~ Open the steam wand to remove out water that had condensed in the steam wand tip every time before steaming milk.

~ Hold a pitcher's handle then move it to the steam wand. Let the other free hand insert the steam wand tip just slightly below the surface of the milk and immediately open the steam wand to full pressure to create microbubbles at the surface of the milk to create a hissing sound for about 2-3 times then immerse the steam wand tip fully into the milk (remember we need only little froth compared to that used to make cappuccino). Then tilt the pitcher slightly to create a natural whirlpool to make sure that the milk mixes up with the froth/foam created at the surface of the milk.

~ Steam the milk until it's temperatures reach between 140°F-160°F with the help of a kitchen milk frothing thermometer if available. If you don't have a frothing thermometer, touch the pitcher from the sides or bottom until you can't hold anymore. Then immediately close the steaming wand.

~ Gently hit the pitcher on a flat table to kill all the large bubbles on top of the steamed milk, then immediately start swirling the milk to avoid it separating from the froth created.

~Then pour the milk gently into the latte glass while holding both the glass and the pitcher. Raise the pitcher higher to make sure that more milk gets it's way into the glass because we need more milk than froth/foam in the glass. After pouring milk to almost 2/3 of the glass, lower the pitcher closer to the glass and increase speed to create art on top of the foam. The more closer the pitcher is, when pouring, the more froth enters the glass and the easier to make latte art.

Caffe' Latte is basically, espresso, steamed milk and little foam on top served in a latte glass.

That has been our lesson today.
