The importance of being reasonable

I love this approach to thinking and living. Sam Harris is one of my favorite authors and thinkers. This quote says a lot not only about society, but about how to approach life. Being reasonable is attractive. Too many people today try to force their opinion on others rather than listening, questioning and trying to understand the other person's point of view. Being reasonable seems appropriate anywhere, anytime.

      I hate to mention this, but right now the US has the MOST UNREASONABLE S.O.B. ever as their president!
      That said, it's a great quote, and very true!

        Hey, @skiponline, I hear you. Sounds like you and I would agree on a number of topics. However, the key is to focus on what we can do ourselves and not worry about the current president, prime minister, who's in Parliament, Congress, the Duma, or whatever else. Forget them (I'm thinking of a more colorful military expression, but I'll leave it at "Forget them" for now!). :-)

        Focus on doing what you can do right where you are with what you've got.

          It is hard to be reasonable when we are initially emotion-driven. You have probably read them already, but here are a couple of books that speak to our propensity to unreasonableness: ‘The Righteous Mind' by Jonathan Haidt and 'Subliminal: How Your Unconscious Mind Rules Your Behavior' by Leonard Mlodinow.
          That said, when we are aware of who actually is in the driver's seat and we are heading towards the abyss, it behooves us to kick the crazy driver out and take the wheel ourselves.

            Damn straight, @tmayd! Yes! It is up to us to "kick the crazy driver out" (love that phrase!) and take the wheel, or control of our lives, ourselves.
