Unreal Engine 4 is a very unique and powerful piece of software.
Unreal Engine 4 and it's competitor Unity 3D are the top 3D game engine software available to the public.
Though Unity is more widely used than Unreal Engine 4, Unity lacks many features that Unreal Engine 4 (UE4) has.
1. Unreal Engine is a AAA engine.
This means that Unreal Engine 4 is specifically built for AAA games.
AAA Games are 3D realistic games such as GTA 5, Call of Duty, Fallout, etc.
Unreal Engine isn't used for creating these games, these games are made using proprietary software such as EA's Frostbite engine or Bethesda's Creation Engine.
Since these engines are not available to the public, Unreal Engine is the next best thing.
Even though most AAA titles are made using another engine, Unreal Engine still has some blockbuster games made with it like:
Player Unknown's Battlegrounds
Fortine
Borderlands
Gears of War
Ark: Survival Evolved
Injustice
Mass Effect
Batman (Arkham Games)
This is only the shortlist, there are hundreds of games made with Unreal Engine.
