That's Pubwich!!

For the last few weeks, @inkpixie and I have been racking our brains trying to figure out what @landonator has been saying. He's been using this word over and over and for the longest time we had no clue what he was saying or where he got it from.

I've wrote about my views about him picking up swear words in the past, but this was a totally new kind of word. This was something we couldn't quite make out and therefor, couldn't translate it from sometimes mumbled toddler word to real case dictionary word.

As the title suggests, the word he was using was PUBWICH.

We even spent a little while trying to decide what the spelling or pronunciation of this word would be. It could have just as easily been:

• Pugwich
• Pubwitch
• Pugwash
• and so on and so on.

There was just no really making him out, but he used the word in the same context all the time. "That's pubwitch," he would say. All the time using it in a tone to say, I'm not really impressed with your response, kind of tone. It wasn't much different than any grown person say, "That's bullshit," if you really thought about it.

Real life scenario:

Boss: "Alright, somebody made a small mistake at work and now we all have to stay late at work to fix that mistake until we can go home. The person that made the mistake gets to leave because they have a dentist appointment."

Worker: "That's bullshit!!"

@landonator's scenario:

Me: "All right Landon, I'll give you a piece of chocolate but first you have to pick up all the toys in your room."

@landonator: "That's pubwich!!"

For weeks we tried to figure out what he was saying. We though, because he goes to a French daycare and is much more bilingual than we are, that he might be saying some sort of common saying in French that we weren't aware of because we're anglophone. So, we asked the daycare if they knew what he was saying and they had absolutely no idea. @inkpixie asked a number of people at work about it being something in French and nobody had any idea what she was talking about.

We were pretty much at a loss for what it could be and decided to just let it go. Maybe he just made up the word and was successfully using it in the same context every time.

Then one day we were all sitting at the kitchen table during supper. @landonator had just finished eating and was watching some cartoons on the iPad. @inkpixie and I were talking about something and there was a break in the conversation just in time for us both to hear the word come out of the iPad.

@landonator was watching Simon. For those of you who don't know, Simon is a British cartoon about a family of rabbits. It's a pretty tame little cartoon and @landonator seems to like it. Anyway, the word wasn't quite what we though, but we were on the right track thinking it was a French word we wouldn't know - it was just a really English word instead.

@landonator was saying RUBBISH.

They are constantly saying, "That's rubbish," on that show, which is also just a nice way of saying, "That's bullshit." So, it turns out we were so close to our guesses on what it could be, we were just trying to connect the dots with the wrong language. And because of that, it makes me realize that British English is almost a different language than North American English in the way words are swapped out for different ones. It's kind of interesting if you really think about it.

That's PUBWICH or BULLSHIT or RUBBISH. It's all the same in the end, as long as get the message across.
