How To Keep Your Liver Healthy

You may not think about this a lot but Liver is probably the smartest organ after brain in your body and also the most imperative for the digestive system. Everything you digest or drink has to go through it. In order for it to perform at its best, you need to eat right so that Liver stays as healthy as possible.
As Rohit Satoskar, MD, of MedStar Georgetown Transplant Institute says “It's an organ you could easily trash if you don't take good care of it,” and he also added that if you let it pass and make your Liver condition worse, it may permanently be gone.

Liver rests under the right side of your lower ribcage and is compared to a size of a football. It helps break down fat from the food that we eat and also helps get rid of chemicals that are harmful to our body so that it can keep our blood clean. Out of many significant roles, it also gives us the energy our body needs which is drawn from the glucose which is stored in the Liver.

Massachusetts General Hospital Director, Ray Chung, has to say that it is very easy to keep our liver healthy and in it’s the best form. He also added that keeping a liver in good condition is more about avoiding food or eatables that are harmful than drinking or eating things that would improve the condition of a liver.

There are some easy steps mentioned below to keep a liver healthy:

  • Avoid drinking too much alcohol
    Don't drink a lot of alcohol. Scarring and swelling are two main symptoms witnessed due to excessive alcohol intake, which then leads to cirrhosis, which is extremely dangerous. According to U.S government guidelines, women should not take more than a glass of alcohol a day and men should avoid taking more than two a day.

  • Exercise and controlled healthy diet on regular basis
    Another way to prevent cirrhosis easily, keep yourself under a controlled weight and NAFLD (liver disease that is nonalcoholic comes from being obese) won’t come close to you.

  • Not all medicines are liver friendly
    Some liver problems may arise due to medicines or drugs that are supposed to aid cholesterol problems. Too much of acetaminophen (Tylenol) painkiller can damage your liver. Acetaminophen (Tylenol) is found in numerous drugs like painkilling medicines and cold medicines.

  • Some dietary supplements and herbs may be harmful
    There are those that can cause problems such as kava, ephedra, chaparral, and cascara, these are considered very harmful supplements.
    There are so-called claims of herbs or supplements restoring liver’s health, some of the renowned ones are chance piedra, borotutu, and milk thistle seed. Chung has to say "There's never been any high-quality evidence that any of these promotes liver health," and he adds that some of them may even damage or cause harm.

  • Coffee is your friend
    A lot of researchers have lately shown that coffee has resulted in lower risk of liver diseases, nothing is hundred percent certain about these researchers but it’s worth keeping an eye out if more researchers conclude in the favor of reducing the risk of liver diseases.
