Azulezhu - a tile tradition of Portugal

in #life6 years ago

The fertility of the soil of the Iberian Peninsula, its general physical features and the climate's favorable conditions determined one of the reasons for the Arab conquest of these lands in the period 711-718. Before the end of the Reconquista in 1492, the Arabs managed to make significant adjustments to the daily routine of the inhabitants of the peninsula. In many spheres of life and culture, mixing took place, with the most significant change being in architecture. The results of the penetration of the Moorish style today can be clearly seen on the streets of Spain and Portugal. Bright examples are the Great Mosque in Cordoba, the Alcázar Castle in Seville, the Alhambra Palace and the famous Portuguese azuležu, which will be discussed.

Azulezhu are tiles, with which the Portuguese faced and continue to revet the walls of the facades of buildings and some internal walls of iconic structures. Nowadays tiles have become an integral part of culture, without which many inhabitants do not imagine Portugal. After the liberation of the peninsula from the Arabs, the Portuguese modified the tiles under their motif, adding their traditional patterns. So the traditional Portuguese azulezhu was born.

Many modern azulezhu reflect important milestones in the history of Portugal, and some of the stories serve as historical reconstructions of events or documents. Such an example can be seen in the Azulezh Museum in Lisbon. There is an exposition that tells about the history of making, applying and becoming a tradition of ceramics from the 15th century to the present day. One of the most valuable specimens depicts the capital before the 1755 earthquake. In connection with the popularity of tiles in Portugal, Vandal groups began to operate, which, for profit, steal tiles for the purpose of further resale to collectors of antiquities and rarities.
