How YOU Can Change The World Just By Switching To Organic Coffee One Cup At A Time.

                                        

Coffee is one of the most widely traded commodities in the world with over 14 billion pounds of coffee produced annually.  Meeting that demand is no easy task. So over time, farming methods have been developed to maximize production but often at the expense of human and environmental health.  What results is the conventional coffee that many of us are use to. 

There is a lot of doubt about buying organic coffee, often because cheaper alternatives are out there and at a glance it’s hard to tell the difference.  But if you look a little harder you may be shocked to find out what’s been added to your morning cup of brew!  Let’s set the record straight and if you haven’t yet accepted organic coffee, you will after you read this.

                                                                        

It’s Healthier.

Studies have shown that coffee that has been treated with chemicals can potentially cause cancer, it can affect your nervous system or even irritate your eyes and skin.  On the other hand, organic coffee is full of  antioxidants that actually prevent cancer and inflammation in your body.  It’s also a great stress and pain reliever because Caffeine is a natural pain reliever.  As a matter of fact many pain medications contain caffeine.

                                                  

Pesticides and Sustainability.

Conventional coffee is dripping in pesticides, herbicides, synthetic fertilizers and insecticides.  Conventional coffee is one of the most chemically treated plants.  This means that coffee beans treated with chemicals are being washed with water that drains into waterways, poisoning the drinking water and air through chemical residues.  The soil is also affected by pesticides sprayed on to the crops.  This produces a nasty cycle with new plants growing in contaminted soil, producing poor quality coffee that is cheap and full of chemicals.  Not only does the environment suffer from this but so do the farmers who are exposed to high levels of chemicals while spraying the crops and while handling them during the harvest.  So to avoid saturating your body in pesticides, organic is a far better choice.

Conventional coffee plants are hybrids developed to flourish in open sun.  Coffee naturally prefers the shade because in its natural state, coffee plants are shade dwellers meaning they flourish under a nice palm tree or a lush forest.  Forests are cleared to make room for open fields in which to grow mass amounts of this sun loving convnetional coffee variety.  Production increases, but the wild ecosystem of flora and fauna gets destroyed.  Natural pest deterrents, like birds and lizards are left without a habitat and without the natural fertilizer of these ecosystems (bird droppings and natural decay) the use of chemical fertilizer increases.

Organic coffee farms, on the other hand, protect their crops from pests using natural methods. Providing a home for wild plants and animals and keeping unique regional ecosystems thriving.  Birds nest in the rainforest and their droppings fertilize the lovely plants below.  They also eat the pests off the coffee plants and the natural cycle continues.

Taste.

The great news about organic coffee is its taste.  It makes sense that coffee beans grown naturally will taste a lot better than coffee dripping in pesticides.  Organic coffee plants are grown in beautiful soil, free from chemicals and full of natural fertilizers that they love.  Being aromatic, organic coffee plants are able to absorb more flavours from plants living around them.  These could include fruit or even cacao plants (yummy chocolate!).  

Support Small Farmers/Poorer Countries

When you buy Fairtrade Organic coffee, you are a part of a world wide movement to bring justice and equality to third world nation farmers and small businesses.  It may seem like a small thing, but choosing an espresso sourced from a Fairtrade farm through a small local business will change lives.  Unlike its non-organic/non-Fairtrade cousin, this coffee makes sure everyone on the chain gets a fair piece of the coffee pie, which can only be good for the world as a whole.  Rather than the rich getting richer, the poor get a chance to provide for their families producing quality coffee for all of us to enjoy, guilt free.  The Next time you go buy a coffee or a bag of beans, make sure to ask for Fairtrade Organic coffee.  Not only will you enjoy the taste, quality, and health benefits but you will be helping to make the planet a better place, cup by cup.
