Quotes, Notes, and Women #30 - Marcus Aurelius

in #life7 years ago

It is not death that a man should fear, but he should fear never beginning to live.
-Marcus Aurelius

What we used to fear was useful to stay away from. The mountain lion in the brush. The poisonous snakes in the dark. The pack of wolves on the horizon.

These fears were useful to avoid the ultimate pain: death.

These days, however, what we consider fear is often concocted from nothing.

Fear of what your friends will think of you if you take up that ballet class. Fear of what your community will think of you if you run for mayor. Fear of being told to leave a job that gives you green paper in exchange for time.

Fear of becoming self-employed and depending only on yourself for success.

These fears are useful to avoid the most necessary pain: change.

All of your fears have one thing in common: they require you to change. You’re afraid to change and it’s stopping you from achieving your goals.

The difference between a winner and a loser is their attitude towards change.

Losers run from possible change like it’s the devil incarnate. Winners run towards change like it’s the ultimate challenge to come out on top.

Beginning to live means beginning to change. If you want more than you’ve ever gotten, you need to do what you’ve never done.

Run towards fear. Run towards success.

Whatever you need, gather it. Whatever you want, chase it. Whenever you can, give it back.
