What does "get a life" mean?

I think all of us were, at some point, online, in an argument with someone, and that person told us to "get a life".

Do you know that expression? So many people use it, for some reason, in all kind of situations. If you care about a video game and you play a lot, get a life looser. If you care about books and you spend too much time inside, get a life looser. If you think a video is nice and someone doesn't agree with you, get a life looser.

We were all "victims" of this expression. However, what does it really mean? What does "getting a life" means, according to the mediocre internet user?

Here's what I believe, and here's why I think you should always ignore people who tell you to get a life.

Everyone has a different way of living, and we should not judge the way they do it. I love spending time in front of a computer, learning new things and creating content. I tried going out with friends, I tried clubs, I tried dancing, I tried drinking and i tried
meeting cute girls. It's not for me.

However, people on the internet think doing that is the way to live. According to them, "living your life" means you should get out, hang out with a bunch of idiots, drink, get drunk every single night and try to get whatever girl you see in front of you.

I don't say getting out with friends and drinking from time to time is bad. I enjoy that myself. However, when you define that as being "the way to live" and when you make fun of everyone for not doing what you do, you're being an idiot.

I don't really want to offend anyone, but it's the truth. Every single person out there should be allowed to live the way they want. If what they love in life is to stay inside and read books, get smarter and do the things they enjoy, why can't others just accept that and resist from using the expression "get a life".

Living should not be defined by the mediocrity of society. Going out with friends and having fun is something mediocre, I know it because I did it a lot in the past. You don't need anything special to go out and drink with your friends, laugh and have fun.

It's something basic. It shouldn't be the "standard" way to do things. It's harder to sit inside and make progress, work, learn and develop as a person than is to go out and have a laugh with your friends, yet people still believe that's the way to live, and if you're not doing that, you're a looser.

That's the reason we see more and more stupid people on the streets these days. It's not that they go out because they love socializing and they love talking to others. They do it because it's the thing to do, because that's what they were taught.

I don't say everyone who spends time outside does it because it's something basic that society taught them, not at all. I just consider that people who do that, and are 100% sure that if you don't do it, you're wasting your life, are not living their life at its fullest either, because they just do what society taught them.

If someone ever tells you to get a life, or to live in a certain way, do yourself a favor and ignore them. It's your life, you should live it the way you want. If you want to spend time inside, sure, do that. If you like to spend a lot of time outside, with people, do that. But don't do something just because people tell you.

Life is something extremely personal, and you should live it the way you like, not the way society thinks it's best.
