Saint Mark came from Palestine. His father's name is not in the books, but we know his mother's name - Maria came from Cyprus, and she was a widow.
In the books of the New Testament, Mark appears under the name Jan. Acts of the Apostles mention him as "John called Mark."
It is thought that Maria - Mark 's mother, was the owner of the Cenacle, where Christ dined with the Apostles the last supper. It is also very possible that Mark's mother owned the Garden of Gethsemane on the Mount of Olives.
Mark was a disciple of Saint Peter. Probably immediately after the sending of the Holy Spirit, Saint Piotr gave Baptism to Mark, that's why he called him his son.
In 44 Saint Paul and Saint Barnabas came to Saint Peter with charity for the Church in Jerusalem. In the Cenacle they found Saint Peter and Saint Jacob. Barnabas was a relative of Mark. Mark accompanied Barnabas and Paul on a journey to Antioch, and then on his first trip to Cyprus. When Paul wanted to go deep into Little Asia through the high mountains of Taurus, Mark objected, which made the Saint Paul very angered. Mark did not have the strength to go on such a hard hiking trip, which is why he turned back in Perge in the year 49.
When Saint Paul was going with Barnabas on his second apostolic journey, Barnabas wanted to take Mark with him, but Saint Paul did not agree, so Barnabas left Saint Paul.
Together with Mark, they went together to Cyprus. It was the family island of Barnabas and Mark mother.
A dozen or so years later, in the year 61, Mark appears again with Saint Paul in Rome. The Apostle himself writes about it in the letter to the Colossians.
The books do not give anything certain about his next fate. According to tradition, he was to be the founder of the Christian commune in Alexandria and its first bishop. There he was to suffer a martyr's death during the reign of Emperor Nero.
Saint Mark's greatest merit is to accurately describe the life and teachings of Jesus.
