Snakebite is a major health issue that affects many people in Myanmar, especially young and poor farmers in developing place. Many patients suffer does not get proper treatment due to lack of medicine and poor logistics system around the country. Many patients lost their life because of delayed access to effective treatment.

In our country Myanmar hundreds of thousands of acres of rice paddy farm and snakes are like to stay at the farm and looking for their foods. Farming place is one of the most dangerous places to get bitten by a snake.

Mandalay, Sagaing, Bago, Magwe, Ayeyarwady and Yangon regions are most of the people are suffer from snake bite and lost their life.

Snakebite is almost neglected issue in our place, we always experience delays for inadequate health care for the patients. They even know that, what type of snake bite, but at hospital they do not have enough anti-venom and most of us watching how patients die. Due to inadequate health care supply and transport issue to reach to nearest hospital patients do not seek medical care.

So in Myanmar, most of the patients try to get access for medical care and also because of inadequate health care supply and transport issue, many patients also use traditional healers.

The reasons for using traditional healers is the cost for treatment is cheaper than hospitals, because patients think of inadequacy of anti-venom at hospitals as well as difficulties with transportation. Traditional healing methods is also longstanding tradition and effective agents.

The poison of the snake can causes blood clotting as well as life-threatening conditions after blood are clotted everywhere in the body. Within the three-hour time window we must get proper treatment to received anti-venom. Yet it also still suffered from loss of kidney function. If kidney fail, Patient need to transfer to Yangon for dialysis centre to wash kidney to save him from organ failure.

Snakebite is historically high in Myanmar until today and 70 per cent of Myanmar’s population who stayed in rural areas with heavy agriculture industry. Agriculture is for most of the people is major occupational and also very high risk exposing farmers to snakebites.

Most of the people are underestimation of the snakebite and our new government is promoting awareness and how important public health issue. Before seeking any traditional treatment and to approach to get treatment and care at the government health care centres or hospitals.
