Netflix has a new documentary. It's called 'The Staircase'. It will either make you squirm about screaming at the television or make you want to become a lawyer.

Over the last week, I've spent significant time reading, thinking and writing about fictional pieces of artwork.

While Michael Peterson is a fictional writer, the media and judicial shitstorm that the surviviors of his wife's death were tossed about in was very much real.

If at first you can't find the right evidence, you've got to be inventive.

Without spoiling the documentary (do not read about the case before you watch it), the entire case focuses on different aspects of Kathleen Peterson's death in which pieces of evidence were submitted to the court that were, let's just say, made up. This is supposed to be a justice system that provides a fair trial based on evidence. It's assumed the evidence isn't fabricated nor handled inappropriately considering the sensitivity of DNA evidence and the ease in which it can be contaminated.

Kathleen was found unconscious and covered in blood by her distraught husband at the bottom of a staircase in the family home.

Was it an accident? Was Michael to blame? And was there any reasonable doubt that he did it?

One of the most interesting parts of the documentary was one of Kathleen's sisters. Candice will make your blood boil and by the end of all this, you'll be hoping she trips down the stairs herself in the last shot of the series you see of her. If this was intentional, it was subtle and fucking brilliant film making.
