Celebrating Mediocrity

in #life6 years ago

So one day while washing the car, during my extended holidays, I listened to someone speak and in the course of the message, he said something that really got me. He said "in Nigeria, we celebrate the people that move on the wrong side of the road..."
Now I've made some long journeys by road, and anyone who has tried that before would attest to the fact that once you get into the usual traffic jam, you'll begin to hear all sorts of sirens blaring from cars, in convoys, devoid of government plates. And as you annoyingly watch under the scorching sun, the siren blaring cars begin to move to the wrong lane (oncoming car's lane) and happily speed off, leaving your non siren blaring private or public vehicle to enjoy the traffic jam. And if we'll be truthful, you begin to wonder and feel excited for whichever 'great man/woman' being carried in those vehicles and then you get that feeling/wish "someday, I'll be able to do that". Do What?!?!?! Break the law and drive against traffic???

But then society, our leaders and we the people (Hehehehe... I like it when Obama says that) have decided to classify breaking laws and rules, as an offence which can only be committed by "we the people", considering every very rich individual, government official, and their families do not live by the laws of the land. So breaking laws, becomes a sin committed by "we the people", and we just aspire quietly to get to that point where we'll be celebrated for committing the sin, rather than be punished for it.
We've gradually possibly without knowing, developed a culture that celebrates mediocrity and everything wrong, so far the individual involved has some nice bank account. And we forget, or rather choose to ignore the fact that is sin,and make excuses for them, forgetting that there ain't no excuse for sin, no matter how, or who commits it...
I hope someday, there is a change of mindset, starting from 'we the people', down to 'they the rich and rulers'. That irresponsibility, would be seen for what it is, mediocrity would be seen for what it is, and breaking the laws, and sin would not be classified as an offence or as sin based on who is involved.
I wonder if at the end of all time, we'll be able to speed on the wide road, to avoid the queue on the narrow road (because we have fat bank accounts), and still bust out somehow, at the pearly gates.
