Making A Good First Impression

in #life7 years ago

Unless you happen to marry someone wealthy that can take care of you for the rest of your life, chances are you will be seeking jobs some time in your adulthood. This is a common experience, and the difficulties that come along with it are common as well. You may find yourself frustrated trying to gain employment, but much of that frustration could be alleviated with the right first impression. Employers will make a judgment about you within one minute of hearing what you have to say. Having a plan means everything when it comes to being successful. Here are some tips that should help you make a good first impression.

Have a Good Resume

One of the first things you need to think about is your resume. You need to have a quality resume drafted before you ever apply to a job so that employers can see an overview of your qualifications. This need to be current, professional, and short enough for someone to glance over and have a good idea of what you do and who you are. Seeking jobs can be much simpler if you already have your information to present because then you can be ready to apply on the spot.

Turn in Your Applications Personally

Another way to make a good first impression when seeking jobs is to turn in your application to the manager personally. While some businesses will not allow you to do this because the manager is busy at the time, others will appreciate the fact that you wanted to hand your application in in person. You should shake the person’s hand, introduce yourself, and explain why you are looking for the job. The person will likely say that he or she will contact you later, and that leaves you a window to call for a follow up in the future.

Every job I ever got before I started working online came from me turning in my application personally. I was able to use my charm to woo the managers, so to speak, and then I was able to land the job. If you don’t have any charm, get some. It will make all the difference when you go to apply for a job.

Prioritize Your Abilities on the Application

You need to list your most prominent and recent credentials on your application first. This will let employers know exactly how qualified you are and how much they may actually want to hire you. You may want to include a cover letter with your resume to illustrate the most important aspects of your application, just so employers can glance over something before determining if they want to pursue an interview. Make their jobs easy and you’ll make them happy.

Check Your Grammar

You should have a professional tone to every aspect of your application, and you should always check over spelling, grammar, and other issues that may make you look dumber than you are. If you aren’t the best writer in the world, get someone else to look over your work for you. This person should look for anything that indicates a lack of confidence or abilities. You’d be surprised by how many college professors are willing to do this if you speak with them. Ask one of your favorite professors from your online college if he or she could do this for you.

First impressions mean everything in seeking jobs, but you can establish positive ones with a good attitude and resume to back you up. Plan out your next applications so they can yield success for you.
