Passion vs. Purpose
Passion vs. Purpose
Living with a purpose is one the greatest gifts but finding this purpose comes with a lot of problems. The phrase follow your passion is quite common and we tend to assume that our number one passion should therefore be our purpose. Being in lifting weights, playing chess, working on our business or just grilling some cheese in a small town diner. the possibilities are endless but is this the right way our passion and purpose the same thing and if they are not why should we distinguish between them ?
If you've noticed the clues then you've probably realized that purpose and passion are not and should not be mistaken as the same thing but what is the difference ? Our life purpose refers to our major goals and aspirations. Our purpose is what we will be remembered for. If our grand grand children read a book about us, then they will discover our purpose. They will see our impact on the world.
Our life purpose is an external thing. Our life purpose is something that we work for and something that we want to accomplish. For example, it could be to cure alzheimer's to diminish social disparities to build a mars base with Elon Musk or to create improved renewable resources.
Those are some pretty huge goals some other goals would be to build family and care for it, to help as many homeless people as possible or even to polish up our own town. So, it once again shines in a new light. There is a tremendous variety some purposes are bigger, some are smaller and everyone has to find his or her own but they all have one thing in common. They deal with external things circumstances and people. All of these have a significant impact not only on our own life but on the life of someone else.
Being at our family our fellow residents homeless people, sick people or the future generations of human beings not a single purpose is just focused on ourselves and that's already the difference. Contrary to the life purpose passion focuses on ourselves. Our feeling, our well being and all of this can become a problem. Having a passion or even multiple passions is in itself incredible.
It brings joy to our life, it makes us happy and content. It's just an insanely good feeling. A passion could be lifting weights, playing video games or even riding horses. Our passion is there to make us happy but confusing it with a life purpuse can create some heavy disturbances.
We can be passionate about our life purpose but not every passion should be a life purpose. We can be passionate about our life purpose but not every passion should be a life purpose. Before we dive into a major problem, I will explain how passion comes to play. We sometimes believe that our passion is in our genetic metarial. Our passion for something that we've done our entire life.
I am not denying that your DNA might have some impact on it but that's not the main origin. Passion rarely comes instantly and on even rarer occasion it stays just like that. Most of the time passion develops over time. If we constantly deal with the topic, then we might become passionate about it.
Even though we never thought that this would be interesting to us. Passions are often linked to professionality the better we get at something the higher the chance that we will become passionate about it. Would you be passionate about boxing? If you get knocked out every single time, probably not. Would you be passionate about boxing when you've put in time energy and work yourself up to the top of the letter.
It's not guaranteed to become passionate about it but the chance is surely high up. We missed up this point quite often. We might develop a passion because we've done it for so long and we believe that this has to be our life's meaning then we get frustrated because we are not good enough to go pro.
We don't realize that we can become passionate in another field. A better approach would be to determine, what impact we want to have and what legacy we want to leave behind. Instead of focusing on the thing that we enjoyed the most, we should focus on the change that we want to accomplish and through pursing this change.
Through pursuing this impact of a long period we might actually become passionate about it but even if we don't become passionate about it we managed to have a significant impact in this world but it's the combination of purpose and passion necessairly the best. In some cases the combination can work against each other. We already clarified, passion is for ourselves and our purpose is making difference in whatever way.
But what if these to clash against each other ? Passion makes us emotional which is good in our free time it gives us a great pleasure. Yet being overly emotional with our life purpose can be a ticking time bomb. Maybe there is a business offer that could catapult our purpose to the next level but we can't take it because we fell emotionally offented or we are too proud or too arrogant to accept it.
Emotional attachment makes positive things even more enjoyable but negative things will feel even worse. Our passion can bring us down maybe even before we get started with our purpose. I personally say we should look for patience everywhere try new things, learn new skills, make different experiences and eventually you find something that's incredible.
We should not necessarily search for a purpose in an area that we are already passionate about. Passion is not a requirement for life purpose or life purpose should be of high value something that we want to achive, something that we want to change. While our passion is just there for ourselves. If we develop a passion on the journey to achieving our life purpose then so be it.
Developing passion through a life purpose would be the right way. Desperately searching for a life purpose in a passion that we've already developed is the wrong way. If we developed a passion for a life purpose, the we still need to maintain at least a little bit objectivity or our feelings might hold us back. Passion is for enjoyment and personal amusement. The purpose is for making a difference in the world.
