Longevity 🐢

I have an upcoming birthday and my son cheerfully asked if I shall have 43 candles on my birthday cake 🎂! It inspired reflection about the past decade but also about what is important going forwards.

I owe it to myself and to my family to take good care of my health and wellbeing. One of my vices is workaholism instilled from a young age and which has frequently taken centre stage to the detriment of my family and wellbeing.

On that note, I have a few accepted pearls of wisdom to share on the habits of healthy, long living people, genes and environment aside.

Here is my shortlist: 🐢

  • Exercise benefits both your physical and mental wellbeing, strengthens your body and helps you to release endorphins (happy hormones);
  • Keep alcohol intake to a minimum (up to one unit for women and one or two units for men per day) and quit smoking;
  • Eat a healthy balanced diet with proteins, a variety of fruits and vegetables, complex carbohydrates and some fats whilst keeping sugar and salt intake to a minimum;
  • Drink plenty of water to flush out toxins and stay hydrated;
  • Maintain close, social relationships which can provide support and help reduce stress;
  • Get enough sleep so that your body can fight off stressors and promote healing;
  • Find time for hobbies and relaxation which will promote a more meaningful and happy life.

My sense of wellbeing improves immeasurably when I am on holiday but I have not yet found a way to recreate the optimum conditions into everyday life!
