Introduction Martial Arts Series - Karate injuries

in #life5 years ago (edited)

In Martial arts, like in all athletic sports, injuries can occur. Karate is a physically demanding sport and there is physical contact with other opponents. Injuries can range from being minor to more serious and can be seen throughout all ages and expertise. Common injuries include sprains, strains, cuts, bruises, fractures and broken bones. This is also specified in Martial Arts Injury Prevention it states:

traditional martial arts, and self-defense practices differ in techniques, regulations,
equipment, and intensity. As a result, martial arts participation causes a wide range of injuries that can vary from mild to severe. According to 2011 data, the most common martial arts injuries are sprains, strains, cuts, and bruises. Broken bones are also common. These injuries frequently affect the knee, ankle, shoulder and elbow. Hands are particularly vulnerable to injury during striking martial arts. Striking martial arts also result in more injuries to the head, face, nose and mouth. Concussions also occur. Some types of martial arts incorporate moves and holds that may result in neck injuries. (1).

In Kyokushin Karate with proper headgear concussive injuries are not that common. The Protective equipment in martial arts is critical. Equipment such as headgear, shin guard, mouth guards and mats should be used at all times. If you’re a beginner or even a black belt; the understanding of protective gear is highly important. Headgear is used to prevent a kick or a punch to the head from causing a concussion or any fatal head injury. Shin guards are used to prevent injury to the shins. Mouth guards are used to prevent oral injuries to the teeth, mouth, cheeks, tongue and jaw. Sparring on thick rubber mats can prevent serious injuries resulting from hard impacts, the rubber mat gives it a shock absorbing quality.
Kyokushin is a hard style of karate meaning there is full contact sparring (kumite). Kyokushin kumite tournaments there are no protective gear, except for a mouth guard and groin cup for protection. This focus on this type of unarmed combat is to resemble realistic fighting. Even though Kyokushin tournaments allow for full contact sparring there is no punching to the head only kicks. Now some people may say that because there is no punching to the face this makes it less of a martial art and not helpful in real life situation. To counter this argument here are some risks factor of Repetitive Head Impacts that are found more in boxers mentioned in the website Risks of Repetitive Head Impact in Full-Contact Karate. Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy which is a degenerative brain disease. The “symptoms of the progressive decline of memory and cognition, depression, suicidal behavior, poor impulse control, aggressiveness, Parkinsonism and dementia” (1).
With all sports training it is important that you are physically capable of training and if people are not healthy, they may need to see a doctor first. The body must be in a health state in order to preform basic movement and actions.

The last part of this series will cover Kata

I would like too. I have many goals that i would like to share on steemit, another is to be a outdoor instructor someone who teaches outdoor skills such as rock climbing and backpacking for short or long expeditions. Although I have a long journey ahead of me.

howdy again sir enosh! Well I think steemit is a perfect place to share those things so I'll be looking forward to them!

A well descriptive post, awsome job :D i if i was you would use markdowns, it makes the text easier to read ;)
soo Kyokushin is the hard style of karate but here you dont use protection???
Isent the use of martial art a way of thinking and a sport, not primearly supose to be used in real life situations?

I’m glad you found my post Enjoyable. Also thank you for the feedback I will definitely keep that in mind. Safety is always the number one priority in any Martial art 🥋 only in competitions and light Sparing is there no protective wear except a cup and mouth guard. When I say karate is a hard style I using that word vary Broad. Hard and soft Martial arts is a term Used for techniques donated how forceful a defender Counters the force of an attack in combat. I hope that make sense lol :)
