Leading By Example

in #life9 years ago

I have four children who are grown into responsible adults. I should be happy that they are all wonderful people. Yet I wish for more. I see things and understand problems that will impact their future. They seem stuck in a world where the blind are leading the blind. Much like the pre-hippie generation of the 1950's they focus on materialistic substance. When will we ever learn? drjohnthumb.JPG

Frustration sets in when you see it happen to your children! I wish I could put on bell bottom jeans, a bright paisley shirt, and wear flowers in my hair to express myself. This would probably motivate them to send for the men in their little white coats to come and take me away... Ha ha.

If history repeats itself, this age of materialism will usher in a time of social rebellion. This time I hope we get more great music like we had in the 1960's. But we will see.

For those of us who lived through the troubles of the Vietnam conflict, our best hope is to lead by example. We have seen this movie before. The path ahead will be full of rebellious change. Priorities will be refocused on personal change rather than the current focus of the illusive fog of group dynamics.

The future will require you to be honest with yourself. Know what you believe and why you believe it. No one will care what WE believe. You must be prepared to stand as an individual and raise your voice to be heard.

The world and your family need you to lead us through the turmoil of tomorrow. Be prepared to set a good example: to point the way.

'Be prepared to set a good example' you said, I think that sentence says everything in a nutshell. That's the mission of us, older people, in this life.
But are we always doing what we know we should? It's not a question especially for you, but also for me and everybody of a certain age. It's a bit like the bible says: "Why do you look at the speck that is in your brother's eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye?"

I try very hard not to judge. If I write that way it is accidental! I will keep it in mind as I proof my future posts.

No no, I didn't mean you were judgmental.
We 'older' people are inclined to think in general that everything used to be better and we often have a strong opinion about something. But you said, and I totally agree, that the only thing we can do is to give a good example.
